Calyptomyrmex piripilis Santschi
Type
location Zaïre (Santschi, 1923e: 282, worker), collected
at Manyema, Niemba-Tengo by Gérard; junior synonyms cataractae
(Arnold, 1926: 283, worker) from Zimbabwe, litoralis
(Arnold, 1948: 221, worker) from South Africa and punctatus
(Weber, 1952: 24, illustrated, worker) from Kenya; worker and
possible female known (see Bolton, 1995)
.
Santschi's description (1923e: 282, worker, my translation) is
WORKER - TL 3.4 mm. Very similar in colour and aspect to C.
nummuliticus but differing as follows - Head and thorax more
distinctly longitudinally striated. The hairs, which are very swollen,
are "piriforme" (?like peppers?) and not circular like those
of nummuliticus. The head is not so wide behind and the thorax
also is narrower. The propodeum dorsum is more transversely concave
and more strongly bordered, finely granulated, rugose, whereas it is
grossly rugose in nummuliticus. The petiole is a little higher
than the postpetiole and more rounded, a little shorter than in nummuliticus.
The postpetiole is more than twice as wide as long but noticeably
shorter than in nummuliticus. A single worker only seen.
