The Ants of Africa
Genus Camponotus subgenus Myrmacrhaphe
Camponotus (Myrmacrhaphe) rotundinodis Santschi

There seems to be no great difference between rotundinodis and Weber's (1943c) description of tameri, so I place both here, with tameri probably being a junior synonym.

{Camponotus rotundinodis}

Camponotus (Myrmacrhaphe) rotundinodis Santschi

return to key {link to the Hymenoptera Name Server} Type locality Zaïre (Santschi, 1935a: 281, illustrated, worker) collected at Kai Bumba, 16.x.1920, by Dr Schouteden; holotype worker only described (see Bolton, 1995) .

Santschi's (1935a) description is -
Worker; TL 5.0 mm; head elongate like Camponotus conradti, but with the eyes larger and set further from the posterior angles of the head which are slightly more acute. Mandibles smooth but matt, armed with 5 teeth. Maxillae very long. Clypeus without a carina. Scape surpassing occiput by about one-fifth its length. Thorax lower and more elongated than the other subgenus members. Thorax profile less arcuate. Metanotal groove absent. Dorsum of pronotum compressed but more convex and borders less pronounced. Petiole scale is remarkable for its thick summit, rounded with a diffuse border; seen from the front regularly arcuate. Gaster elongated.
Colour black; mandibles, antennae, inferior femora and articulation of tibiae, yellow; rest of legs medium brown; borders of gaster segments yellow. Very finely shagreened, dull. Posterior angles of head and pronotum, petiole scale and gaster with reduced sculpturation and shinier. Long oblique white translucent hairs on head and thorax, more numerous on declivity of propodeum, petiole scale and gaster; few on the legs. Pubescence whitish, short closely spaced on body and appendages. The original is at {original description}.

{Camponotus tameri}

Camponotus (Myrmacrhaphe) tameri Weber

{link to the Hymenoptera Name Server} Type location Sudan (Camponotus (Myrmopiromis) tricolor; Weber, 1943c: 387, illustrated, worker; new name given by Bolton, 1995: 126, as original was a junior secondary homonym of tricolor, Stitz, 1912, from New Guinea); worker only known (see Bolton, 1995) .

{Camponotus (Myrmopiromis) tameri}Weber's (1943c) description (as tricolor) is at {original description}. The collated illustration (right) is of the holotype of Camponotus tameri from Sudan. The original photographs, together with enlarged images, are from the MCZ, Harvard University, website at - MCZ link.

The fresh specimen shown below shows tameri to be a simple junior synonym of rotundinodis.
