Genus Crematogaster Introduction

Subgenus Nematocrema Santschi (1918d: 182)

Diagnostic Features - Antenna without a distinct club, filiform in female. Palp formula 4:3. Frontal carinae short. Mesonotum without a median carina. Propodeal spines long straight and acute frontal carinae well developed. Petiole with parallel sides, usually straight or scarcely arcuate, rarely broader posteriorly than anteriorly. Postpetiole entire.

Bernard (1952) commented on the genus as large species with a very long petiole, particulary western African. Only the three species listed below are listed within the subgenus by Bolton (1995). Delage-Darchen (1972b) made a detailed study of the larvae of what she, advised by Baroni Urbani, took to be varieties of Cr. stadelmanni from Gabon and Ivory Coast.
