Crematogaster (Sphaerocrema) fauconneti Forel - new status

return to key {link to the Hymenoptera Name Server} Type location Zaïre (Cremastogaster Wilwerthi Santschi, v. fauconneti n. var., Forel, 1910e: 434, worker) collected at Nyangwe to Stanleyville, by Fauconnet; junior synonym confusa (cremastogaster wilwerthi v. confusa n. var.,Santschi, 1911g: 208, worker; new synonymy) from Congo collected at Gomba, by A. Weiss; worker only described .

Forel's (1910e) description of fauconneti is at {original description}. Santschi's (1911g) description of confusa is at {original description}.

The photomontage is of a specimen collected in Central African Republic, Dzanga-Sangha NP; Camp 3; 02°50’01.8" N 16°08’13.7" E 375m; 04.02.2005, U.V : 18h10-6h30, dans petite saline à proximité du camp, by Phillipe Annoyer. Other images can be seen in the folder at - {original description}

The distinctive colouration and general sculpturation, etc. so clearly separates this form from the yellow-brown Crematogaster wilwerthi that I feel justified in raising it to full species status.
