Pheidole kohli Mayr

Soldier - return to key Minor - return to key {link to the Hymenoptera Name Server} Type location Kenya (Mayr, 1901b: 11, footnote, soldier & worker); soldier and worker described (see Bolton, 1995) .

Mayr's (1901b) description is at {original description}.

Wheeler (1922) reported a single soldier from Medje, Zaïre (Lang and Chapin), without further data, which agrees very closely with Mayr's description of this species. Also Pheidole kohli Mayr, variety - A single imperfect soldier and five females, three of them winged, taken from the stomachs of a toad (Bufo regularis) and a frog (Rana ornatissima) from Garamba, (Lang and Chapin), appear to represent an undescribed variety or subspecies of kohli, the soldier being darker and having a distinctly narrower head. The pedicel, gaster and funiculi are, however, lacking in the single specimen of the soldier. It seems to be undesirable to base a new name on such defective material.

{Pheidole kohli}The photomontages are of specimens collected from Usambara Mts, Tanzania; Zigi Lodge, Amani NR; S 5°05' E 38°38'; 2200 m; Vasily Grebennikov, 9-11.x.2002. These seems a close match to the areniphila description but apparently are much darker. Note the collection data does not confirm the two forms are related.
