Type location Namibia (Ponera lamellosa n. sp., Roger, 1860: 295, worker; in Platythyrea, Roger, 1863a: 173); junior synonyms grisea (Sima aethiops ssp grisea Forel, 1910f: 5, male; synonymy by Forel, 1913b: 307) from Botswana, longinoda (Forel, 1894b: 75, worker) from South Africa; rhodesiana (Forel, 1913a: 110, worker & male; Forel, 1913h: 347, queen) from Zimbabwe; and suturalis (Forel, 1909b: 64, worker) from Angola (last three synonymised by Brown, 1975: 8); worker and male described (see Bolton, 1995) .
