Forel (1917) described donisthorpei as smaller, TL 5.2-5.4 mm, than the type with more pronounced spines.

WORKER - TL 6.1-6.5 mm, HL 1.51-1.59, HW 1.44-1.48, SL 1.61-1.66, PW 1.40-1.48
Distinguished from Polyrhachis weissi by its larger, thickset size and abundant erect white to greyish hairs, also dense greyish pubescence. Colour dull black.

The Forel (1894b) specimens were from Delagoa, Mozambique, collected by Dr Liengme. Arnold (1924) reported specimens from Durban. A savannah and veldt species.
