Psalidomyrmex wheeleri Santschi
Type location Zaïre (Santschi, 1923e: 263; illustrated by
Wheeler, 1922, as procerus); worker only described
.
WORKER - similar to procerus, TL 13.6-14.6 mm; mandibles
subtriangular, head narrower, scapes longer, petiole longer than
broad. Colour black (Bolton, 1975b: 13, not illustrated).
Collected by the Lang & Chapin expedition of 1910. Santschi
(1923e) noted (my translation) "the example shown by Wheeler
(1922, p 90-91, fig 17) has the head with much longer antennae than
procerus, of which I have a co-type, sent by Emery (figure of
which was used by Emery in Genera Insectorum). P. wheeleri
differs on the other hand from longiscapus Santschi by the
striations of the postpetiole, which are transverse with the former
and longitudinal in the latter. The procerus is stockier and
more similar to obesus Wheeler but that is larger".
Bolton's modern description (1975b) is at
.
Bolton (1975b) also reported examining material from Cameroun,
Avom (G. Terron) and indicated that a female may be among the 1910
material.
